WOMEN TRUCK DRIVER EXPERIENCE SCORECARD

Research shows that women truck drivers are statistically safer commercial motor vehicle operators, with fewer safety violations, greater compliance with federal safety regulations, and lower crash risk compared to male drivers. (Scott, A., Davis-Sramek, B., & Ketchen, D. J. (2024). Men at work… unsafely: Gender differences in compliance with safety regulations in the trucking industry. Production and Operations Management, 33(4).

However, women in trucking face elevated risks of sexual harassment, workplace violence, and structural barriers associated with male-dominated and isolated work environments—factors shown to negatively impact retention.

(EEOC, 2016; NASEM, 2018; BLS; NIOSH)

While ‘best carrier’ lists for women are widely promoted, there is little proof they are credible. Trucking lacks independent, peer-reviewed research examining safety, harassment, or working conditions for women who work as truck drivers specifically highlighting a gap between industry marketing and measurable outcomes.

REAL Women in Trucking has developed the Women Driver Experience Scorecard to provide an evidence-based evaluation of carriers across five key pillars affecting women’s safety, dignity, and success—offering a data-driven alternative to industry lists that claim they are the "Best Carrier to Drive for" by combining company data with driver-reported experiences to expose gaps between

carrier and association influenced claims and real-world conditions.

This approach centers measurable outcomes over marketing narratives

Unlike typical industry lists, this scorecard is driver-focused, transparent, and grounded in measurable criteria tied to safety and retention. It combines quantitative metrics, qualitative indicators, and minimum standards—prioritizing verified outcomes over marketing-based recognition.
